Conowingo woman was killed in a single-vehicle crash near Port Deposit on Tuesday, according to Maryland State Police.

Investigators identified Nancy Jane Panco, 72, as the victim.

Panco, who was the sole occupant of the car, died at the crash scene on Perrylawn Drive, about a half-mile south of Craigtown Road, police reported.

Police said the accident took place shortly after 1 p.m. when Panco inexplicably lost control of the black 2008 Lincoln MKZ sedan she was driving on Perrylawn Drive.
At that point, police added, the car veered off the highway and overturned, coming to rest in the grass off the northbound shoulder.

Information concerning Panco’s direction of travel was unavailable, as of Tuesday night.

Emergency workers cut off the top of the wrecked car to reach Panco, after receiving the accident-with-rescue dispatch, according to Wayne Tome, an EMT chief with Water Witch Volunteer Fire Co. of Port Deposit, which handled the call.

Panco was pronounced dead at the scene after paramedics examined her, he reported.

An MSP crash reconstruction team reported to the scene, as did a forensic investigator.

The investigation is continuing as troopers try to determine why Panco lost control of the car.

“There was no indication of alcohol or narcotics,” an MSP spokesman reported Tuesday night.

The fatal crash forced police to close the section of Perrylawn Drive south of Craigtown Road and north of Diamond Jim Road for about two hours.
