One person was still in critical condition Monday night after a vehicle heading in the wrong direction on River Watch Parkway led to a four-vehicle crash that sent six people to the hospital.

Monique Sullivan, 35, was westbound in the eastbound lanes with her husband and 4 year-old son as passengers about 10:50 a.m. when she hit two vehicles, authorities said.

Amelia Hiltz, 32, was in the same lane as Sullivan and tried to veer right before being hit by Sullivan’s 2003 Chevrolet Suburban. The Suburban then hit a car driven by Kevin Mollenhauer, 25, who was in the other lane. Mollenhauer’s car slammed into Hiltz’s, causing most of the damage, said Richmond County sheriff’s Lt. Randy Prickett.

Sullivan’s SUV flipped and hit another car driven by Augusta lawyer Maureen Floyd, 52.

Hiltz was in critical condition Monday night at Medical College of Georgia Hospital, a spokeswoman said. Floyd was upgraded from critical to serious. Sullivan and her husband, Demond, were listed in fair condition, and Mollenhauer was treated and released.

The Sullivans’ son suffered scratches, Prickett said.
Deputies initially thought the child had been ejected from the vehicle but now think he crawled from it after the crash, Capt. Scott Gay said.

Sullivan entered the wrong side of the road at St. Sebastian Way, according to witnesses, and was traveling at high speed for almost three miles, Prickett said. The reason was still unclear Monday night.

Doug Herman said he witnessed the crash and was still shaking several hours after he chased the Suburban in an attempt to warn the driver.

Herman said he was at an intersection near Broad Street and River Watch when he saw the Suburban barrel through a red light and narrowly miss another vehicle. Then the Suburban headed up the wrong ramp.
Herman said he tried to flag down the driver, who was speeding with the flashers on.

“(She) was going so fast,” Herman said.

Several vehicles avoided the Suburban before it rounded a curve on River Watch, Herman said.
“I was so upset after all of this that I knelt down and said a prayer,” he said.

Sullivan will face charges of driving on the wrong side of the road. Other charges are possible pending an investigation.

“We don’t know if there was some type of impairment or some other condition that led to (the wrong direction of travel),” Gay said.
