MONROE TWP. -- A township man who allegedly was driving while drunk lost control of the car he was driving and the vehicle slammed into a utility pole along U.S. Route 322.Anthony L. Sutton, 30, was transported to the Cooper Medical Center in Camden for treatment of injuries sustained in the 9:20 p.m. Saturday crash on Route 322 near Jobs Lane.Sutton was driving a 2001 Oldsmobile Aurora west on Route 322 hen he swerved into the eastbound lane. Police said Sutton correct his lane by steering back to the right; however, he over-corrected, causing his vehicle to begin to rotate clockwise on its vertical axis.The car left the roadway, traveled approximately 56 feet on the property of 806 Glassboro Road and struck a utility pole, snapping it, police said. The car traveled an additional 19 feet at which point its left front side struck a tree, then a second tree approximately 9 feet further west.Police said the impact threw Sutton, who was not wearing a seat belt, into the back seat. He was unconscious and unresponsive when authorities arrived at the scene.When he regained consciousness, an odor of alcoholic beverage was detected emanating from his breath, police said.Sutton was charged with driving while under the influence, reckless driving, failure to maintain a lane, failure to wear a seat belt, being an unlicensed driver, driving while suspended and driving a vehicle with a suspended registration.Police said the Oldsmobile is registered to another Monroe Township resident.
